Peer Led Support Group
Forward Assist has over the last few years facilitated ‘veteran specific’ consultation /support groups in a variety of community and custodial settings such as: Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland and HMP Durham, HMP Kirkham and HMP Northumberland. So far over 3000 veterans have been referred to our organisation. As a result of research, evaluation and ‘veteran centric focus groups’ Forward Assist incorporated vocational based skills training into its repertoire of weekly activities. Since 2013 Forward Assist has continued to provide a drop in session for marginalised and isolated veterans from our Veterans Headquarters at the John Willie Sams Community Centre in North Tyneside. Specific ‘needs led’ services are developed in consultation with the veterans that access the service.
Forward Assist’s ‘Drop In’ and Peer Led support groups provide a much needed forum that facilitates the opportunity to meet and associate with other veterans on a daily or weekly basis. The Drop In, led by Veterans, Employment & Life Coaches, assists individuals to navigate and access the multitude of organizations and services available to them in the civilian community. It also offers a safe environment and a chance to meet and be with others who understand the multiple and complex issues facing individuals that have served in today’s Armed Forces.
Forward Assist Activity Groups also encourage group members to utilise the numerous transferable and existing skills they gained whilst serving in the Armed Forces and allow them the opportunity to get fit and healthy whilst reducing social isolation and loneliness.
