THE VETERANS VICTORY GARDEN
In 2010 Forward Assist were allocated an allotment within the Community Kitchen Garden located in the grounds of Seaton Delaval Hall. Since that time numerous veterans have maintained the plot growing vegetables for personal use with much of the produce going to good use with the award winning Forward Assist Cook2Give project.
Today, the number of allotments that are tended by Forward Assist veterans has grown to five and all are packed with nutritious healthy vegetables, grown under organic principles. As well as growing fresh vegetables and flowers for use in the award winning 'Cook2Give' Project veterans will soon be able to gain nationally accredited qualifications in horticulture.
Former Service Personnel have many transferable skills and the Veterans Victory Garden project in the grounds of Seaton Delaval Hall facilitates a tranquil environment to relax and feel closer to nature. Regular visits to the vegetable allotments, in the company of other veterans help them gain new skills, increase self-esteem, reduce loneliness, whilst adding much-needed structure to their lives in a safe and therapeutic environment.
